NORTHSTAR IS THE MENTAL PERFORMANCE COMPANY.
We help people gain a mental advantage by training the mind to be at their best when it matters most.
Our vision is to make training the mind is as common as training the body though world class coaching, media, and tech.
And this is why:
In 2015, the unthinkable happened to Sean Mahoney.
A normal night out with friends turned into a life-altering accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told him he would never move his limbs again. That this was the ceiling of what his life would be.
They were wrong.
In 2021, after years of relentless work to recover, Sean regained enough ability to move across the country and pursue his Master’s in Sport & Performance Psychology at the University of Denver. Along the way, he continued to regain control over parts of his body he was told he never would. But the most important progress he made wasn’t physical.
It was mental.
By learning how to train his awareness and influence his thoughts, emotions, and actions, Sean discovered something profound: when the mind is trained, the body often follows in ways beyond what is widely thought to be possible. If mental training could influence neurological rehabilitation at that level, we had to ask a bigger question: what else might it be capable of?
Around that same time, I was working at a venture-backed mental health technology company promising to “solve” the mental health crisis. There were millions in funding, bold claims, and cutting-edge tools. Yet something felt fundamentally incomplete.
Mental health is essential, but it’s only half the equation.
We don’t wait until our bodies are injured to start caring about them. We train proactively: to prevent breakdown, to perform under pressure, and to explore what we’re capable of. The mind deserves that same proactive, performance-driven approach.
Sean and I crossed paths at the University of Denver and quickly realized we shared the same belief: the mind is far more powerful than the world gives it credit for, and compared to our bodies or our crafts, it’s far too undertrained.
After years of learning from and working alongside psychologists serving the highest performers in the world — across professional sports, high-risk occupations, and the arts — we decided it was time to bring that same elite mental training out from behind locker room doors and closed networks, and into the lives of people who wanted more from themselves.
That’s how Northstar was born.
Northstar isn’t just another coaching service or app. It’s a philosophy: that no matter what happens to us, we always have the ability to choose our response, and that choice can make us stronger, more capable, and more aligned with who we want to become.
Today, we work with high performers to train their minds, and then we tell their stories so that anyone with a dream can learn to train their mind like the pros too.
We don’t see this thing as a company. We see it as a movement. And we won’t stop until everyone trains their mind the same way they do their body, so that we can all think, feel, and do our best in the moments that matter most.
With love,
Sebastian & Sean
